How to plan the music for a bar night

Good bar music is not a random playlist. It follows the night: calm when guests arrive, livelier as the room fills, at its peak late at night. Here is how to plan it.

In short

  • Split the night into three or four phases
  • Give each phase a target energy and a set of genres
  • Change energy step by step, not abruptly
  • Decide in advance who may change the music

Plan your night in five steps

  1. Map your night

Note when guests arrive, when the room is fullest and when you close. These times define your phases.

  2. Set an energy curve

Give each phase a target energy: low at arrival, medium during the main hours, high late at night.

  3. Choose genres per phase

Pick genres and a few must-play songs for each phase, and list what should never play.

  4. Plan the transitions

Raise the tempo and energy in small steps. Abrupt jumps interrupt conversations.

  5. Define who can change what

Agree which staff may skip, change the mood or take over—and how requests are handled.

An example energy curve

Example phases of a bar night
TimePhaseEnergy
18:00ArrivalLow—conversation first
20:00LoungeMedium—more groove
22:00EnergyRising step by step
00:00PartyHigh, until the planned end

Example only. Your opening hours and guests define your phases.

React to the room

A plan is a starting point. If the room fills earlier, lift the energy earlier; if it stays quiet, hold the phase longer. Staff should be able to do this with one control, not by building a new playlist.

SkafRemix follows exactly this kind of plan automatically: phases, energy, genres and rules are set once, and staff can hold or lift the mood at any time.

Questions and answers

How many phases should a bar night have?

Three or four phases work for most bars: arrival, main hours, late night and optionally a closing phase.

How fast should the energy rise?

Gradually. Raise tempo and energy in small steps across several songs instead of jumping between moods.

Should guests influence the music?

They can, if requests are checked against your plan. Requests that do not fit the phase should wait or be declined.
