Comparison
A DJ every night or an automated music system?
A good DJ is unbeatable for live performance and reading the room. But not every night needs one, and not every venue can book one every night. Here is an honest comparison.
In short
- A DJ is stronger at live performance and spontaneous moderation
- SkafRemix covers the nights and phases where no DJ is booked
- In Assisted mode SkafRemix works next to your DJ
- Packages from €9 per month, net
Package that usually fits: Flow from €19 per month, net. Your venue check confirms the right package.
Side by side
| Area | DJ on site | SkafRemix |
|---|---|---|
| Live performance | Yes—the DJ’s core strength | No live performance; prepared transitions and moments |
| Reading the room | Very high | Rule-based plus staff control |
| Spontaneous moderation | Yes, personal | Only prepared, approved moments |
| Availability | Booked per night | Every opening hour |
| Repeatable operation | Depends on the DJ | High after setup |
| Guest requests | Directly at the booth | Optional by QR, checked against your rules |
When to book a DJ
For headline nights, events where the performance is the attraction and celebrations that want personal moderation, a DJ is the right choice.
When SkafRemix fits
For the regular opening hours, warm-up and closing, weeknights and event spaces where hosts do not book a DJ, SkafRemix keeps a consistent flow with little staff effort.
In clubs, SkafRemix runs in Assisted mode next to the DJ team: it suggests and prepares, a person approves.

How much does a DJ cost? The factors behind the price
Two quotes for the “same” night can be far apart. These factors explain most of the difference—ask about each one before you compare prices.
| Factor | Why it changes the price | What to clarify |
|---|---|---|
| Hours | Most DJs price by set length; setup, soundcheck and breaks add time. | Start and end of the set, setup time and the rate for overtime |
| Day of the week and season | Fridays, Saturdays, holidays and the end-of-year season are in high demand. | Whether a weeknight or a regular booking is priced differently |
| Equipment | A DJ who brings speakers, a mixer or lights charges for the equipment and its transport. | What the DJ brings and what your venue has to provide |
| Travel | Distance, parking and a late journey home are often charged separately. | Travel costs and any overnight stay |
| Experience and demand | Well-known or very experienced DJs are booked out earlier and charge more. | References from similar venues and how the DJ prepares |
| Type of night | Background music in a bar is different work from a club night or a private party with a microphone. | Whether hosting, announcements or special requests are part of the job |
We deliberately show no price figures for DJs: they depend on your region and change over time. Ask several DJs for written quotes.
Questions to ask before booking a DJ
A short checklist for the quote, so you compare like with like.
- Is the price per night, per hour or per set, and what does overtime cost?
- Which hours are included, counting setup and soundcheck?
- Does the DJ bring equipment or play through your sound system?
- Are travel, parking or accommodation charged on top?
- Is the price net or gross, and how does the DJ invoice?
- Who takes care of the music licence for the night?
- How does the DJ handle guest requests and your no-go list?
- What happens if the DJ falls ill—is there a replacement?
- Can you hear a recent set or see the DJ play beforehand?
- What cancellation terms apply on both sides?
DJ or automation: signs for each choice
The comparison above shows the strengths. These signs from day-to-day operation help you decide night by night.
A DJ: guests come for the person
If a resident DJ or a name on the poster is the reason guests come, no system can take that place.
A DJ: the night needs a microphone
Games, announcements and reacting to a speech or a surprise need a person who talks to the room.
A DJ: one big night, not many ordinary ones
For a few special nights a year, booking a DJ is simpler than setting up a system.
Automation: music on many nights a week
When music runs on most opening days, a fee per night adds up, while the package price stays the same.
Automation: the sound changes with every shift
A music profile set once keeps the same direction, whoever is working tonight.
Both: a DJ for the peaks, SkafRemix for the rest
Many weeks have one or two nights worth a DJ. SkafRemix can cover the hours before and after the DJ’s set.
Questions and answers
Can SkafRemix and a DJ work together?
Yes. In Assisted mode SkafRemix suggests and prepares while the DJ decides. It can also cover warm-up and closing.
Is SkafRemix an AI DJ?
It is an automated music system with AI-supported planning. It does not perform live; it follows your rules, phases and approved requests.
What does it cost compared to a DJ?
Packages start at €9 per month, net, plus the Edge box. A DJ is priced per night; compare both for the nights you actually need.
How much does a DJ cost per evening?
There is no single price: what a DJ charges per evening varies widely with your region, the length of the set, the day of the week and the DJ’s experience. Ask several DJs for written quotes for the same hours and compare what is included, such as equipment and travel.
Is a DJ paid per hour or per night?
Both are common. Some DJs quote a flat fee per night for a fixed set length, others an hourly rate; in both cases, ask how setup, breaks and overtime are charged.
Who needs the music licence when a DJ plays in my venue?
Check with your collecting society before the night: in many countries the licence for playing music in public is arranged by the venue or the organiser, not by the DJ. Agree in writing with the DJ who covers what. This is general information, not legal advice.
Is SkafRemix cheaper than a DJ?
It depends on how many nights you need to cover. A package costs the same every month, while a DJ’s fee comes back for every night you book; use the calculator above with your own fee. For nights where the performance is the attraction, a DJ remains the better choice.
What does SkafRemix cost in the first year?
With Flow and the box bought, the first year is twelve monthly payments of €19 plus €350 once for the standard box; after that only the monthly price. With the box included, you pay €49 per month for 12 months, then €19. All prices are net; remote setup is free.
